August 27th Stage 29 Kapfelberg to Regensburg.
25kms
Well ahead of our planned schedule and needing only to be at
the railway station in Regensburg by 2.30 today to say goodbye to Vicky and
Magali, our companions since Schaffhausen, we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast at
the “Jachthaven” at Kapfelberg, watching the first of the huge Danube barges
working upstream.
The riding is very straightforward via Poikam to Bad Abbach
where we crossed the river by an unexpectedly grand modern bridge and simply
followed the south bank of the Danube all the way to the famous Steinerne
Brucke in Regensburg. The final few kilometres in the city’s park are very
convivial and an appropriate introduction to a wonderful city, the highlight of
which, for us, was undoubtedly the interior of St Peter’s Cathedral, the late
afternoon light streaming through the stained glass of the west end. Indeed,
all of the stained glass in the cathedral, most of it very old, is
breathtaking. This peaceful old place is a dramatic counterpoint to the city
itself which even on our brief acquaintance is obviously dynamic and
cosmopolitan. It will be a pity to leave it tomorrow without getting to know it
better.
25 kms Total from Schaffhausen 437 kms Total from Galway 2343 kms
